Now, while you’re busy plotting your escape, let me share a little nugget of wisdom that’s been a game-changer for me when it comes to making memories with my own kiddos over the past years. I always take them to the East Coast of the UAE or Musandam, Oman. Picture this: a place where they can have a blast *and* you can sneak in some well-deserved R&R ( rest and relaxation). Sound like paradise? That’s right—head to the beach or find yourself a spot by the water! But have you also been to a paradise just 2 hours away from the UAE? Let’s talk about Oman. Here’s a short guide to the best places to visit in Oman by car.

Yes, why settle for the same old routine when you could spice things up with a dash of adventure? I’m talking about embarking on a road trip to Musandam, Oman, and then setting sail on a cruise around the Oman fjords. Intrigued? Here are some useful tips on how to make it happen!

Embark on an Unforgettable Family Road trip from Dubai to Musandam, Oman

This sleepy fishing town ranks among the most sought-after and highly esteemed day trip destinations, coveted for its proximity to the Ras Al Khaimah border. Driving from Dubai is conveniently easy and straightforward, making it accessible to all. Venture to Khasab in Musandam and prepare to be awestruck by its picturesque seascape and breathtaking fjords.

We took the E611 route on our road trip to Musandam, passing through Ras Al Khaimah. The journey was straightforward, lasting approximately 2.5 hours. Along the way, we stopped at a petrol station just before the border, where we indulged in a delightful morning coffee. Upon reaching the border, we exited our vehicle to have our passports stamped. UAE residence visa holders do not require a visa prior for travel to Musandam. However, it’s crucial to ensure the validity of your car insurance when driving to Oman. If not possible beforehand, insurance can be purchased at the border. Despite a short queue, it took us around 30-40 minutes to complete the paperwork before crossing the border.

Cruising Around Musandam and Taking in the Beauty of Oman’s Fjords

An Unforgettable Experience in the Middle East!

The ultimate family adventure awaits as you set sail across the Indian Ocean and have a glimpse of Oman’s breathtaking fjords. With a plethora of options available for boat excursions, I strongly advise booking through Getyourguide in advance to secure your spot in a cruise boat. Alternatively, you can book a cruise that includes transportation to Musandam.

A beautiful view of one of Oman’s public beaches.

I’ve sailed around Musandam countless times, but on our last trip, we opted for an overnight yacht cruise with the kids. Accompanied by four other tourists, our boat featured six bedrooms equipped with hot and cold showers, toilets, and a spacious bed ideal for a family of four. We stayed in the master bedroom, which comfortably accommodated our family.

Setting sail from Khasab, our journey took us to the majestic fjords for snorkeling and kayaking. My kids enjoyed kayaking and swimming in the azure blue waters of Oman. In the afternoon, we ventured to a hiking spot offering breathtaking views of both the Sea of Oman and the Indian Ocean. I must say, it was a nice and calm cruise, and I didn’t expect my small children to enjoy it. Perhaps it’s because the water has always been calm in Musandam.

Hiking the Fjords of Oman

Hiking through the fjords of Musandam is an unforgettable experience. The breathtaking views of both the Sea of Oman and the Indian Ocean left me speechless!

Before sunset, our yacht stopped and anchored in the middle of the fjords, where our captain and the staff led us on a hiking expedition. To reach the hiking spot, we boarded a speedboat from the anchored yacht, navigating through the fjords. Along the way, we were delighted by abundant wildlife sightings. I witnessed one of the most beautiful sunsets there, and afterward, we returned to the yacht. We enjoyed a brief movie session, watching a documentary about Oman, followed by a lavish dinner of fresh seafood caught by the staff from the sea. Our meal included soup, salad, grilled fish, and pasta. The highlight of the trip? Waking up to a tranquil sea view, enjoying breakfast as a pod of dolphins gracefully danced in the water.

Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or a nature enthusiast, this experience is bound to captivate you and your family. Dive into the crystal-clear waters for snorkeling, paddle along the coast in a kayak, and keep your eyes peeled for playful dolphin pods. Cruising Musandam is an adventure that belongs on everyone’s bucket list – an experience that will stay with you forever. It’s also one of the best activities you can do when visiting Musandam by car. If you chose not to drive to this sleepy fishing town, you can always book through an agency, and they will be able to arrange your transportation.
Dolphin-watching is one of the water activities you can do there and this is truly a treat for my kids. We spotted several pods of dolphins in the early morning and were so happy to see them.
